How to Use a Vintage Typewriter and Other Tips
At The Vintage Bunting Hire Company, we are constantly adding to our hire stock. The latest vintage beauties to hit the website are a stunning collection of original vintage typewriters.
When I was a little girl, my Dad was studying for a degree through the Open University over eight years. Link to typewriters? My bedroom was over his study, and every time an assignment was due, he would pull an all nighter and type all night, driving to hand deliver the document through his tutor’s door in the morning. Years later, when I was studying for my first degree, he advised me to never leave assignments and coursework to the last minute. And yes, every time there was a big deadline, there I was, frantically typing through the night, finishing to the sound of the dawn chorus…but on a PC by then. The sound of the keys tapping away all night are a fond memory of mine, perhaps not such a fond memory for my Dad. But he got the degree in the end….and it left me with a fondness for the sound of a vintage click clack typewriter. So much so, that I made these for sister company Hopscotch Handmade Gifts – which have proved so popular that they are currently a sell out!

In response to demand from some of our younger clients, here is a simple guide on How to Use a Typewriter……
1.Put a regular piece of office paper between the paper table, and the platen. (If you don’t know what these parts are, Google: ‘typewriter diagram’.
2. Roll the platen knobs clockwise until the paper appears visible, and you can lift the paper bail, and put it down on the very top of the paper.
3. Move the carriage over manually to the right until it doesn’t go any further. (The margins stop the carriage.)
4. Begin typing your first sentence.
